SERBIAN PEACEKEEPERS IN LEBANON WIN FOOTBALL COMPETITION

Srpski mirovnjaci u Libanu pobednici takmičenja u fudbaluSerbian soldiers in the UNIFIL multinational operation in Lebanon, in addition to their basic tasks, often participate in competitions that are organized at different levels of the Mission. Perhaps the toughest competition so far, and certainly the most complicated one, because they travelled two hours to reach the sports arena, from Sector East to Sector West, was organized by the battalion from Ghana and it was the football tournament.

Although the Serbian football team has not played a single game together and most of the players had never played a big football, they accepted the challenge for Serbian soldiers to compete with a team of hosts from Ghana, a team of Finnish-Irish battalion, then teams of Indonesia, Tanzania, India and Malaysia. In the quarterfinal an extremely combative team of India was defeated with a score of 3:2 (1:2), then, in the semi-finals, the team of the Serbian contingent was better than Malaysia with score of 3:0 (1:0), while in the finals they defeated the host team from Ghana with 1:0 (0:0).

What kind of sporting success of Serbian soldiers this was, speaks the fact that Ghana's football team consists of players who are mostly members of the national team of their army. However, this time, many times mentioned Serbian defiance came to the fore. The skill and experience was replaced with a fantastic fighting spirit. The idea of the contingent commander Lieutenant Colonel Viktor Dobric was that all Serbian soldiers from both Sectors and bases 7-2, 9-66 (Sector East), 1-26 and Command of the Mission in Nakuru (Sector West) take part in the competition has been fruitful. For the first time, representatives of all units performing duties in MNO in Lebanon were the protagonists of such a big sports event, and the medals were just meant to be given to the champions, who this time were better than the soldiers who represent more than one and a half billion people on the Earth!
